Recognizing High-Value Care:

Preferred-Value Providers

The Alliance recognizes providers who deliver great care at lower costs with a Preferred-Value Provider designation. This recognition currently includes primary care providers as well as those who offer shoppable, non-emergency services, such as colonoscopies, MRIs, and musculoskeletal procedures, that have a meaningful impact on employers’ overall healthcare spend.

When employers guide their employees to Preferred-Value Providers, employers, their employees, and their employees’ families save money. The average large employer can see savings of 12%-15% per member per month (PMPM) by guiding their employees to high-value healthcare.

It’s easy to find these providers with our Find a Doctor tool. Providers with a Preferred-Value Provider designation will have a quality icon next to their name. Find a Doctor allows users to search for providers by location, gender, language, and see whether a provider is accepting new patients. The tool also includes Leapfrog Safety Scores.

Reedsburg Area Medical Center (RAMC), a Preferred-Value Provider in The Alliance network, was recognized with a 2025 Healthcare Transformation Award at The Alliance’s 2025 Spring Symposium for its commitment to providing high-value care locally. This award is given by The Alliance Board of Directors and acknowledges organizations that drive meaningful change in healthcare by improving quality, affordability, and accessibility.

In response to patients in Reedsburg seeking lower-cost care outside of the community, RAMC significantly lowered the cost of several high-demand, shoppable procedures to ensure patients could access affordable care closer to home.

In partnership with The Alliance, Reedsburg Area Medical Center introduced over 25 bundled pricing options for common services. Even for services for which RAMC already offered competitive pricing, the organization took proactive steps to further reduce costs and support employers and their employees.

The other 2025 Healthcare Transformation Award recipient was Gamber-Johnson, a Wisconsin-based leader in rugged mounting solutions that became self-funded to manage rising healthcare costs.

Gamber-Johnson partnered with high-quality, low-cost, transparent providers to offer essential services, often at no cost to employees and their families. The company also established an onsite clinic available to employees and their families, further increasing access to care. This strategy has saved Gamber-Johnson and its employees over $1 million and created a culture of wholistic wellness.

Why Employers Choose Self-Funding

More employers are choosing self-funding as a way to take control of their healthcare spending. With self-funding, employers pay for the medical claims of their employees and covered family members directly rather than purchasing a traditional insurance plan. This approach offers more flexibility, transparency, and the ability to tailor their benefits to meet the needs of their workforce. Self-funding allows employers to partner more closely with providers that offer great care at lower costs and invest in strategies that improve health outcomes while managing healthcare spend.
